Fine Art Prints from Royal Cornwall Museum

Goonvrea, Perranarworthal, Cornwall. December 1924

A general view of Goonvrea from a distance with Cliff House below. In 1980, Rex Barratt writes in his book, Stately Homes in and Around Truro, " Goonvrea, probably built by the Fox family of Falmouth and later owned and occupied by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, M.P. for Truro (1865-1878), who was a director of the Perran Iron Foundry and the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Cornwall. Later owners were J.P. Paull, and W.E. Harris, who was there in 1939. During the last war it was utilised by U.S. troops and is now a well-known hotel". The hotel was owned by Tony and Joyce Webb and is reported to have been devastated by fire in 1982. By the early 1990s new build houses were erected on the site. The stable block remained standing and has since been converted into houses. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to Goonvrea, Perranarworthal in Cornwall during the winter of December 1924. The image showcases a breathtaking general view of Goonvrea from a distance, with Cliff House nestled below. In his book "Stately Homes in and Around Truro". Rex Barratt reveals that Goonvrea was likely constructed by the esteemed Fox family of Falmouth. Later on, it became the cherished residence of Sir Frederick Martin Williams, Member of Parliament for Truro from 1865 to 1878. Sir Williams held directorial positions at both the Perran Iron Foundry and served as the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons in Cornwall. Throughout its history, this remarkable manor passed through various hands including J. P. Paull and W. E. Harris, who resided there in 1939. During World War II, Goonvrea played an important role as it was utilized by U. S troops stationed in Cornwall. Tragically, fire ravaged the beloved hotel owned by Tony and Joyce Webb in 1982; however, remnants such as the stable block remained standing amidst devastation. By the early 1990s, new houses were erected on this historic site while preserving some elements of its past. The photographer behind this timeless piece is Arthur William Jordan whose lens captured not just a mere photograph but also a glimpse into Cornwall's rich heritage - where grandeur meets nature's beauty harmon
