A close up view of Goonvrea House, Perranarworthal, Cornwall. December 1924

A general close up view of the front of Goonvrea House with the conservatory to the left. In 1980, Rex Barratt writes in his book, Stately Homes in and Around Truro, " Goonvrea, probably built by the Fox family of Falmouth and later owned and occupied by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, M.P. for Truro (1865-1878), who was a director of the Perran Iron Foundry and the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Cornwall. Later owners were J.P. Paull, and W.E. Harris, who was there in 1939. During the last war it was utilised by U.S. troops and is now a well-known hotel". The hotel was owned by Tony and Joyce Webb and is reported to have been devastated by fire in 1982. By the early 1990s new build houses were erected on the site. The stable block remained standing and has since been converted into houses. Photographer Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
A glimpse into the past: Goonvrea House, Perranarworthal, Cornwall. December 1924. This print showcases a close-up view of Goonvrea House, a grand manor that stood proudly in its prime. The image captures the front of the house with its exquisite conservatory to the left. Historical records reveal fascinating details about this remarkable estate and its notable owners throughout the years. Built by the esteemed Fox family of Falmouth, it later became home to Sir Frederick Martin Williams, an influential figure who served as Truro's Member of Parliament from 1865 to 1878. Sir Williams was not only associated with prestigious institutions such as Perran Iron Foundry but also held the esteemed position of being Cornwall's first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons. The ownership changed hands over time, passing through J. P. Paull and W. E. Harris before finding itself utilized by U. S troops during World War II. Eventually transformed into a renowned hotel under Tony and Joyce Webb's ownership, tragedy struck when fire ravaged Goonvrea House in 1982. Today, all that remains are memories captured within photographs like these; however, new houses now stand on this historic site while the stable block has been thoughtfully converted into residential dwellings. Thanks to photographer Arthur William Jordan's keen eye for detail and preservation through his lens, we can still appreciate this snapshot from a bygone era.
