EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a historic event during World War One. On the night of Monday, 28 January 1918, London was subjected to a devastating air raid by three Gotha bombers. This particular aircraft met its fate at the hands of two Royal Flying Corps (RFC) scouts who engaged it over Essex. In an official communique issued by Viscount French, Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Home Forces, he recounts the heroic encounter: "A number of aircraft from the RFC took to the skies. Two of our scouts bravely encountered an enemy aeroplane in close combat. After a fierce struggle, flames engulfed the raider and it plummeted 10,000 ft below. Tragically, all three crew members perished in this fiery descent". The image showcases not only the wreckage left behind but also offers a glimpse into life on the home front during wartime. A small group of men can be seen examining and assessing the remnants with solemn expressions etched upon their faces. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of both courage and sacrifice exhibited during times of conflict. It is a testament to those who fought tirelessly to defend their homeland against aerial attacks that threatened innocent lives. As we reflect upon this historical moment captured forever in black and white, let us remember those who lost their lives defending freedom and honor their unwavering bravery amidst chaos and destruction.
