EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic De Havilland D. H. 88 Comet, a remarkable racing aircraft that left an indelible mark in aviation history. Conceived with two powerful D. H. Gipsy Six engines, this sleek beauty was specifically designed for speed and agility. The year 1933 marked a significant milestone in the Comet's legacy when the Victorian Centenary air race from England to Melbourne, Australia was announced. This prestigious event provided the perfect opportunity for the Comet to showcase its exceptional capabilities on an international stage. Three of these magnificent planes were built and entered into the race. Amongst fierce competition, it was G-ACSS Grosvenor House that emerged victorious, claiming the coveted speed prize after completing the grueling journey in an impressive 70 hours and 54 minutes. Piloted by C W A Scott and Tom Campbell Black, this triumph solidified their place in aviation folklore. In this particular image captured at the Wroughton Air Show in August 1993, we witness G-ACSS soaring through the skies once again, reminding us of its enduring allure even decades later. The photograph showcases not only its elegant design but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries within flight technology.
