This photograph captures the excitement of the Grand Aerostatic Fete at Aylesbury, held on the spacious meadow of Mr. T.J. Hinds of the Black Swan Inn, Cambridge Street, on the 11th of July, 1849. The fete marked the 416th ascent of renowned balloonist, Mr. Charles Green, in his majestic Royal Victoria Balloon. The event drew a large crowd, who gathered to witness the spectacle of hot air ballooning in the early Victorian era. Mr. Green's balloon, adorned with vibrant colours and regal insignia, ascended gracefully from the meadow, accompanied by the melodic tunes of the Royal Thame Brass Band. An added thrill was the launch of a parachute containing a living animal from the balloon car, adding an element of adventure to the day's proceedings. The scene is further enhanced by the backdrop of a rainbow, adding a touch of whimsy and magic to the event.
