EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the spirit of adventure and pioneering spirit of two remarkable women, Marjorie Rosamond Seton Dower Vereker (nee Mulliner) and Adelaide Franklin Cleaver (nee Pollock), as they proudly stand next to Adelaide's de Havilland Gipsy Moth aircraft, G-aVY Will o' the Wisp II, at Heston Aerodrome during the annual flying meeting of The Brigade of Guards on 22 June 1930. The event took place at the Brigade's HQ at Heston Air Park, where both men and women pilots competed for the coveted cup. Marjorie, dressed in a stylish flying suit, helmet, and goggles, is seen intently looking over the controls of the biplane, while Adelaide, with a confident smile, poses next to her aircraft. Both women were pioneers in the field of aviation, defying societal norms and breaking barriers as they soared through the skies. Marjorie, who later married Gordon Vereker, was an accomplished aviator and set numerous records for women pilots in the 1930s. Adelaide, on the other hand, was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west in 1932. This photograph is a testament to their courage, determination, and love for flight during an era when aviation was still in its infancy.
