EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, Boeing F4B-4 NR9846, formerly known as A9241 and NC-14, is shown before its extensive modification by stunt pilot Jesse Bristow. In 1940, the US Marine Corps stripped two of its F4B-4s of military equipment for the Bureau of Commerce (later known as the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA). The second aircraft, NC-14, was soon released by the government and sold to Jesse Bristow. Bristow, an accomplished aviator, wasted no time in re-registering the aircraft as NR9846 and began modifying it for his aerial display acts. The aircraft was outfitted with I-struts, a full engine cowling, a variable-pitch propeller, and fittings for Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO) rockets. After successful air show demonstrations, NR9846 was sold to a new owner. However, tragedy struck in 1948 when the plane crashed during a flight, marking the end of its aviation career. This photograph captures a moment in time when the Boeing F4B-4 NR9846, once a military aircraft, was transformed into a thrilling aeronautical marvel, showcasing the versatility and innovation of aviation technology during the mid-20th century. The image features a classic Boeing F4B-4 aircraft, with its distinctive design and powerful engine, as it undergoes a remarkable transformation under the skilled hands of stunt pilot Jesse Bristow. The photograph is a testament to the rich history of aviation and the ingenuity of those who have pushed the boundaries of flight. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a unique perspective on the evolution of aviation and the role of pioneering aviators like Jesse Bristow. The intricate details of the aircraft and the atmospheric setting of the photograph add to its charm and make it a valuable addition to any aviation or history collection.
