Maximilien Francois Marie Isidore de Robespierre: A Pivotal Figure in the French Revolution This handcoloured lithograph depicts Maximilien Francois Marie Isidore de Robespierre (1758-1794), a French Revolutionary politician who rose to prominence during the Reign of Terror. Robespierre was born in Arras, France, and studied law in Paris before becoming a lawyer and a member of the Paris Bar. During the early stages of the French Revolution, Robespierre was a prominent member of the Jacobin Club, a radical political organization that advocated for the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic. In 1792, Robespierre was elected to the National Convention, the legislative body that replaced the monarchy. Robespierre's most significant contribution to the French Revolution came during the Reign of Terror, a period of intense political violence and repression that lasted from 1793 to 1794. Robespierre was a leading member of the Committee of Public Safety, which governed France during this time. He advocated for the use of the guillotine to execute those deemed to be enemies of the Revolution and worked to suppress counter-revolutionary movements. Despite his radical reputation, Robespierre's reign came to an end in July 1794 when he was arrested and brought before the Convention. He was accused of being a tyrant and was eventually executed by guillotine on July 28, 1794.
