EDITORS COMMENTS
Mastic, scientifically known as Pistacia lentiscus, is an aromatic resin obtained from the trees of the same name, native to the Mediterranean region. This beautiful chromolithograph is a testament to the botanical wonders of the past, taken from Hermann Adolph Koehler's Medicinal Plants, edited by Gustav Pabst, published in Germany in 1887. The image captures the intricacies of the Mastic tree, with its small, oval leaves and delicate white flowers contrasting against the gnarled bark from which the precious resin is extracted. The tree is depicted in its natural habitat, surrounded by the rocky terrain and sun-kissed landscape typical of the Mediterranean. Mastic resin has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. It was highly valued in ancient Greece and Rome for its ability to soothe digestive issues, freshen breath, and even treat wounds. The resin was chewed as a gum or mixed with water to create a drink. In traditional medicine, it has been used to treat various conditions such as gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory issues, and dental problems. The process of obtaining mastic resin is a labor-intensive one. The bark is scored, and as the tree weeps, the resin oozes out and hardens upon contact with the air. The resin is then collected and cleaned before being used. The aromatic and slightly sweet taste of mastic makes it a popular ingredient in food and beverages, particularly in Mediterranean cuisine. This stunning botanical illustration not only showcases the beauty of the Mastic tree but also highlights the rich history and significance of this remarkable plant in both medicine and culinary traditions.
