This evocative photograph captures the raw essence of traditional tin mining in Cornwall, England, as it was coming to an end in the late 1980s. The image, taken at the Geevor Tin Mine in Pendeen, Cornwall, depicts a lone miner deep underground, poised to drill into the mine's rich veins of tin ore. The mine, which had been in operation since the late 18th century, was just about to cease production due to declining profits and the increasing automation of the industry. The miner in the photograph wears a traditional Cornish mining helmet, complete with a safety lamp, to protect him from falling rocks and the low-lying coal dust that filled the mine's tunnels.
