EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Lord William Henry Grenfell, also known as Lord Desborough, is seen at his esteemed residence, Taplow Court near Maidenhead, with his youngest surviving child, the Hon. Ivo Grenfell, and his daughter, the Hon. Imogen Grenfell. The year was 1916, a time of profound sorrow for the aristocratic family, as Lord Desborough's eldest sons, Julian and Gerald, had both tragically lost their lives in 1915 during the First World War. Lord Desborough, a man of remarkable stature at 6 feet 5 inches, was not only a distinguished sportsman but also a prominent Liberal politician. He had rowed for Oxford in the 1877 Boat Race and served as President of the British team at the 1908 Olympic Games. In addition to his public offices, he converted Taplow Court into a rest home for Red Cross nurses during the war. The Hon. Ivo Grenfell, the surviving son, is captured in this image with his father, sharing a tender moment amidst the family's grief. Sadly, Ivo's life was also cut short when he was killed in a car accident in 1926, resulting in the extinction of the peerage with Lord Desborough. This historical photograph encapsulates the profound impact of the First World War on aristocratic families and the poignant memories of those left behind.
