Imogen, a captivating character in Shakespeare's play Cymbeline, takes center stage in this collection of illustrations by Kenny Meadows. From the title page to scenes depicting her trials and triumphs, Imogen's journey unfolds before our eyes. In one engraving, Lord Desborough stands beside his remaining son, Ivo Grenfell. Their solemn expressions hint at the hardships they have endured alongside Imogen. Another image showcases Imogen disguised as a boy named Fidele. Mistakenly believed to be dead, Guiderius and Arviragus mourn her loss with heavy hearts. Posthumus, Imogen's husband tormented by Iachimo's false evidence of infidelity, is portrayed in another illustration. The anguish on his face reflects the inner turmoil caused by doubts about his beloved wife's faithfulness. But amidst these challenges, Imogen remains steadfast. In an encounter with Iachimo himself, she resists his attempts to seduce her despite insinuations about Posthumus' unfaithfulness. Her strength shines through as she refuses to succumb to temptation. One particularly striking image depicts Iachimo hidden inside a trunk within Imogen's bedroom overnight. This unsettling scene captures the vulnerability that comes with invasion of privacy and highlights the lengths some will go for deceitful gain. Symbolism also plays a role in Meadows' artwork; an introductory illustration shows a bird trapped in a cage representing Imogen while a fox lurks nearby symbolizing both Iachimo and Cloten - characters who seek to manipulate or harm her. Through these engravings from 1840, we witness moments of despair and resilience within Imogen's story – reminding us that even when faced with adversity and deception, true strength lies within staying true to oneself.
