Guillaume de Croy, Lord of Chievres (1458-1521): A Portrait of Power and Wisdom This exquisite print showcases Guillaume de Croy, Lord of Chievres, a pivotal figure in the history of the Low Countries during the late Middle Ages. Born in 1458, he rose to prominence as the chief tutor and First Chamberlain to the future Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. In this portrait, Guillaume is depicted as a wise and powerful man, adorned with symbols of learning, military prowess, and authority. The oval frame encloses an intricately architectural background, suggesting the grandeur and stability of the nobleman's position. Guillaume wears a tall, conical hat, a sign of his high rank, and a heavy chain symbolizing his office as Chamberlain. A cherub and an owl, emblems of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, flank the portrait, emphasizing Guillaume's intellectual abilities. The shield on the wall bears the arms of Chievres, while the flags with the fleur-de-lis and the lion represent the House of Valois, to which Guillaume belonged through his mother. The armor and the warts on his face underscore his martial background and his age. Guillaume de Croy's life was marked by significant achievements. He was the first count of Beaumont and the first Marquess of Aarschot. He also served as the Lord of Temse and played a crucial role in the education and early reign of Charles V. This portrait encapsulates the essence of a man who combined military might, political acumen, and intellectual brilliance, leaving an indelible mark on the history of the Low Countries.
