This evocative image captures the moment of departure for the Grenadier Guards as they prepare to leave Trafalgar Square in London, en route to the Crimean War in 1854. The Grenadier Guards, an elite infantry regiment of the British Army, are seen here in their distinctive bearskin hats and scarlet uniforms, forming up in the square before setting off on their arduous journey. The date is February, and the chill of the winter air is evident in the frozen ground and the breath visible in the air. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a significant event in British and European history. The conflict arose from a dispute between Russia and the Ottoman Empire over control of the Holy Land, and it drew in numerous European powers, including Britain, France, and Sardinia.
