EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the charismatic and trailblazing actress, Gertie Millar (1879-1952), in a stylish and modern trouser suit, setting the stage for women's fashion in the early 20th century. Taken in 1916, as she was coming to the end of her successful run in the popular musical comedy "Bric-a-Brac" at the Palace Theatre, Gertie exudes an air of confidence and comfort in her cool, silk pyjama suit. The suit, with its masculine yet elegant design, allowed her to move freely and effortlessly, making it the perfect attire for her favorite pastime - tennis. As she prepared for her next engagement in a Charles Cochran production at the new St. Martins Theatre in September 1916, Gertie's fashion-forward choice of clothing was a testament to her progressive and independent spirit. The trouser suit was a bold departure from the traditional feminine attire of the time, and Gertie wore it with grace and style, both on and off the stage. This portrait, taken on a tennis court with the net in the background, perfectly encapsulates Gertie's spirit of adventure and her commitment to embracing new trends. Her confident pose and the slight smile on her face speak volumes about her personality and her ability to captivate audiences with her talent and her unique sense of style. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the history of women's fashion and the role of trailblazing women like Gertie Millar in shaping it. Her dudley pyjama suit, a symbol of modernity and comfort, continues to inspire and influence fashion to this day.
