This print depicts Erasmus Sarcerius (1501-1559), a renowned German humanist scholar of the Renaissance period. Born in Rottenburg am Neckar, Württemberg, Erasmus was an influential figure in the intellectual world of the 16th century. He is best known for his extensive work in textual criticism and editing of classical texts, particularly the works of Plautus, Terence, and Cicero. Erasmus was a central figure in the intellectual movement known as the Northern Renaissance, which emerged in the German-speaking regions of Europe. He was a prolific writer, producing a vast body of work that spanned various genres, including scholarly treatises, satirical essays, and letters. One of his most famous works is the "Adages," a collection of over 3,000 proverbs and maxims, which became a standard reference work for scholars and intellectuals of the time.
