This exquisite 18th century illustration depicts the Pacific Black Duck, Anas superciliosa, a fascinating avian species native to the Pacific coast of North and South America. The Pacific Black Duck is a member of the Anatidae family, order Anseriformes, and is closely related to other ducks, geese, and swans. This illustration is believed to have been created during the era of great exploration and discovery, likely inspired by the voyages of renowned British explorer, Captain James Cook (1728-1779). Cook's expeditions, which spanned from 1754 to 1794, brought about significant advancements in the understanding of the Pacific world, including the discovery of new lands and the documentation of numerous new species. The Pacific Black Duck is depicted in this illustration with remarkable detail, showcasing its distinctive black plumage, white underparts, and orange eyes.
