EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the enigmatic figure of Major-General Charles George Gordon, known by many names including Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum. A British army officer and administrator, Gordon's legacy is one of bravery and controversy. Born in 1833, Gordon rose through the ranks to become a respected military leader known for his unconventional tactics and fearless demeanor. His time in China earned him the nickname "Chinese Gordon," while his service in Egypt as Governor-General led to the title "Gordon Pasha." However, it was during his time in Sudan as Governor of Khartoum that Gordon's legend truly took shape. Defending the city against a siege by Mahdist forces, he became a symbol of British imperial might and determination. Tragically, he met his end in 1885 when Khartoum fell to the enemy. This portrait from Edward VII His Life and Times captures Gordon's steely gaze and commanding presence, reflecting the complex nature of this historical figure. As we look upon this image, we are reminded of Major-General Charles George Gordon's enduring impact on history and his place as one of Britain's most revered military leaders.
