GIA2899498 Five composers from 'Les Six', at the Eiffel Tower, 1921 (photo); (add.info.: Les Six (pronounced: [le sis]) is a name given to a group of six French composers who worked in Montparnasse. The name, inspired by Mily Balakirev's The Five, originates in critic Henri Collet's 1920 article "Les cinq Russes, les six Francais et M. Satie" (Comoedia, 16 January 1920). Their music is often seen as a reaction against the musical style of Richard Wagner and the impressionist music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history when five influential composers from 'Les Six' gathered at the iconic Eiffel Tower in 1921. The group, consisting of Germaine Tailleferre, Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, and Jean Cocteau along with Georges Auric, exuded creativity and innovation as they posed for this timeless portrait.
Known for their avant-garde approach to music composition, these talented individuals were seen as a reaction against the dominant musical styles of their time. Their work was a departure from the influence of Richard Wagner and the impressionist music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Each composer brought something unique to the table - whether it be Tailleferre's feminine touch or Milhaud's bold experimentation. Together, they formed a dynamic group that pushed boundaries and challenged conventions in the world of music.
As they stand proudly in front of one of Paris' most famous landmarks, you can sense their passion for artistry and dedication to their craft. This photo is not just a snapshot in time but a testament to the enduring legacy of 'Les Six' and their impact on modern music.
