EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Keep Your Money in the Empire, from the series Where Our Exports Go, c. 1927" by William Grimmond takes us back to a pivotal era in history. This vibrant colour lithograph, housed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, is part of a larger collection commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board. Created between 1926 and 1933, these artist-designed posters aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire. With over 200 posters acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s, this particular piece stands out for its powerful message. The poster urges viewers to support their own empire by keeping their money within its borders. It highlights that the empire provides an ideal market for British skill and industry. The image showcases various products from different regions of the empire while emphasizing unity and economic strength. However, viewing these historical artifacts through a contemporary lens raises complex questions about colonial legacies and uncomfortable beliefs associated with them. While celebrating Britain's past achievements and global influence, it also prompts reflection on how those actions continue to shape our present world. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking artwork today, it serves as a reminder of both progress made and challenges yet to be addressed regarding issues related to imperialism and globalization.
