EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an early schematic plan of the exquisite gardens surrounding the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra, North India. Created around 1805 by an anonymous Indian artist from the 19th century, this intricate artwork measures 70x41.2 cm and is part of a private collection. The paper on which this plan is drawn bears watermarks with two dates, 1799 and 1800, adding to its historical significance. The inscription in black ink in nasta liq script reads "nakshe bat (?) shah jahan badshah" translating to "Plan of. . . (?) Emperor Shah Jahan". This detail provides valuable insights into the origins and purpose of this remarkable piece. In addition to these inscriptions, pencil notations in English adorn the drawing, describing and identifying various plants within each flowerbed. These meticulous annotations offer a glimpse into the careful planning that went into creating such breathtaking gardens. On the reverse side of the frame are old exhibition labels that further enhance its provenance and add another layer of intrigue to this already fascinating artwork. Through this photograph captured by eChristies Images and made available through Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, viewers can appreciate both the architectural beauty of these garden designs as well as gain insight into their historical context. It serves as a testament to human creativity and ingenuity while offering a window into one of India's most treasured landmarks – The Taj Mahal.
