EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the 13th Dalai Lama, Sir Charles Bell, and Maharaj Kumar Sidkeong Trul-ku. Taken in 1910 by an English photographer from the Johnston and Hoffman photography firm in Calcutta, this image provides a glimpse into the diplomatic relations between Tibet, Sikkim, and British India during that time. In the photograph, we see these influential leaders seated together in a studio setting. The 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, is dressed in traditional Tibetan attire while Sir Charles Bell appears in his military uniform as the British Political Officer for Sikkim, Bhutan, and Tibet. Maharaj Kumar Sidkeong Trul-ku stands beside them wearing royal Sikkimese garb. At this particular juncture of history, the Dalai Lama was living in exile to evade Chinese invasion threats. Meanwhile, Sidkeong Tulku Namgyal had recently assumed power following his father's passing but tragically succumbed to heart failure shortly after ruling briefly. This image not only showcases these prominent figures but also symbolizes the complex dynamics between colonial powers like Britain and indigenous rulers within their territories. It serves as a testament to both historical significance and cultural diversity during this period of rapid change. The print is now part of a private collection but continues to provide valuable insights into early 20th-century politics and diplomacy within the context of British India's imperial rule over its colonies.
