Arthur Honegger, 1930 (colour litho)
LSE2899495 Arthur Honegger, 1930 (colour litho) by French School, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Les Six (pronounced: [le sis]) is a name given to a group of six French composers who worked in Montparnasse. The name, inspired by Mily Balakirevs The Five, originates in critic Henri Collets 1920 article " Les cinq Russes, les six FranAzais et M. Satie" (Comoedia, 16 January 1920). Their music is often seen as a reaction against the musical style of Richard Wagner and the impressionist music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
thur Honegger (French: [aEutyEu E" nEoEaEoEeEu]; 10 March 1892 - 27 November 1955) was a Swiss composer, who was born in France and lived a large part of his life in Paris. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print showcases a colourful lithograph of Arthur Honegger, a renowned Swiss composer and member of the influential group Les Six. Created by the French School in 1930, this artwork captures Honegger's essence with its avant-garde style and satirical elements. The composition is filled with chaotic energy, reflecting the rebellious nature of Les Six as they sought to break away from traditional musical styles. The whimsical caricature of Honegger is surrounded by various objects and musicians, creating a sense of randomness and playfulness. A steam locomotive serves as inspiration for his most famous work, Pacific 231, which can be seen represented here. With angular lines and stylized features, this cartoon-like portrayal adds an element of humor to the image. It beautifully combines both French and Swiss influences in its execution - showcasing Honegger's dual heritage. Leonard de Selva expertly captures the spirit of this iconic composer through his lens. This print not only pays homage to Arthur Honegger but also celebrates the innovative spirit that defined Les Six. It serves as a reminder that music has no boundaries or limitations when it comes to artistic expression.
