EDITORS COMMENTS
This black wooden face mask, dating back to the late 1800s-early 1900s, is a remarkable artifact from the Baule Culture. Standing at a height of 40.7 cm, it is currently housed in the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Known as a kple kple mask, this piece holds great significance within the context of traditional African performances. It belongs to one of four pairs of masks that are integral to the goli dance sequence. During these performances, young boys don these masks and engage in a rapid stamping dance while alternating with their partners. The male kple kple mask features vibrant red paint on its head, distinguishing it from its female counterpart which is represented by this particular example painted entirely black. The contrasting colors add depth and symbolism to the performance. With intricate wood carving techniques evident throughout its design, this mask showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of Baule artisans during that era. Its horn-like structures protruding from either side further enhance its visual appeal. Gifted by Katherine C. White to the museum's collection, this extraordinary piece offers us a glimpse into West African culture and serves as a testament to their rich artistic heritage.
