EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from the Byzantine era - a Mold for a Eulogia (Blessing) Bread. Crafted from wood and dating back to the 600s-900s, this intricate mold stands at a height of 8.80 cm with a diameter of 1.90 cm. Housed in the prestigious Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, it is an exquisite representation of early Christian practices. During this period, it was customary to imprint images and inscriptions onto loaves of bread using specialized molds like this one. This particular mold depicts the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Mount Golgotha, where Jesus Christ was crucified and buried outside Jerusalem. It is believed that these wooden molds were used to stamp loaves distributed to pilgrims visiting Jerusalem as they commemorated their spiritual journey. The level of detail achieved through carving on this mold is truly awe-inspiring. The relief work captures the essence and significance of religious symbolism during that time, reflecting both artistic skill and deep devotion. Donated by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mallon as part of their thirty-fifth anniversary gift, this historic artifact serves as a testament to Byzantine craftsmanship and its influence on early Christianity's rituals and traditions.
