Guardian Griffin, 1150-1175 (pink limestone (Verona Marble))

491134 Guardian Griffin, 1150-1175 (pink limestone (Verona Marble)) by Italian School, (12th century); h:76.70 w:47.30 d:119.90 Wt: 1348 lbs cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Griffins are fabled creatures that have the characteristics of an eagle and a lion--combining watchfulness and courage. In Christian art, the dual nature of the griffin was often used to signify that of Christ himself: divine (bird) and human (animal). Griffins were often used as guardian figures in church sculpture and were placed in portals and choir screens. The creatures seen here, with their inward-turning heads, were certainly used for such a purpose. When viewed from the front, one griffin may be seen protecting the figure of a knight between its paws, while the other griffin guards a calf. Their original function was probably to support the columns of a porch in front of a church doorway.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the magnificent Guardian Griffin, a masterpiece created by the Italian School in the 12th century. Carved from pink limestone, also known as Verona Marble, this sculpture stands tall at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Griffins are mythical creatures that embody both the strength and vigilance of an eagle and a lion. In Christian art, they often symbolize Christ himself - divine like a bird yet human like an animal. These majestic creatures were commonly used as guardians in church sculptures and placed on portals and choir screens. In this particular artwork, two griffins with their heads turned inward fulfill their role as protectors. One griffin is seen sheltering a knight between its paws while the other guards over a calf. This composition highlights their dual nature - one guarding humanity while the other protects innocence. Originally serving as supports for porch columns outside church doorways, these guardian griffins have now found their place within museum walls. Their intricate details and symbolism continue to captivate viewers centuries later. This print allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship of Italian artists from long ago but also invites contemplation on themes of protection, divinity, and courage that transcend time.
