The silver altar of Saint Johns Treasure, left side altar, detail, 1367-1483

7268071 The silver altar of Saint Johns Treasure, left side altar, detail, 1367-1483 by Florentine School, (14th-15th century); Museo dell Opera del Duomo, Florence, Tuscany, Italy; (add.info.: Florence, Museum of the Opera del Duomo (Museum of Florence Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore): the silver altar of St. Johns Treasure (1367 - 1483), by Florentine masters. Left side of the altar. A few hundred kilos of silver, in addition to gilding and highly refined enamels, were used to create the silver Altar and the Cross of the Treasure of St. John, one of the masterpieces of goldsmithing of all time. Created between 1367 and 1483 and destined for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence, it is now kept in the Museum of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, the rich Guild of Merchants commissioned some of the greatest artists of the period to do the work: fourteenth-century Florentine masters such as Leonardo di Ser Giovanni, Antonio di Salvi and Francesco di Giovanni. The statue of the saint in the center is the work of Michelozzo di Bartolomeo. The completion of the work will take place only a century later with the flanks of Pollaiolo and Verrocchio. Therefore this dossal represents an extraordinary synthesis of the main trends in Florentine goldsmith and sculptural art between the Gothic and the Renaissance.); Ghigo Roli

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the left side altar of the silver altar of Saint John's Treasure, a remarkable masterpiece created by Florentine masters between 1367 and 1483. Located in the Museo dell Opera del Duomo in Florence, Italy, this exquisite piece is an epitome of goldsmithing artistry throughout history. Crafted with several hundred kilos of silver, along with gilding and refined enamels, the silver Altar and Cross of St. John's Treasure were originally intended for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence. However, they are now preserved within the Museum of Santa Maria del Fiore. Commissioned by the wealthy Guild of Merchants during the early fourteenth century, renowned artists such as Leonardo di Ser Giovanni, Antonio di Salvi, Francesco di Giovanni contributed to its creation. The central statue depicting Saint John was sculpted by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo while Pollaiolo and Verrocchio added their artistic touch to complete this extraordinary dossal over a century later. The photograph beautifully captures intricate details that highlight an exceptional fusion between Gothic and Renaissance influences prevalent in Florentine goldsmithing and sculptural art. Ghigo Roli skillfully immortalizes this stunning artwork through his lens on behalf of Fine Art Finder.
