by French School, (12th century); 13.7x8.9 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: This almond-shaped enamel plaque depicts the half-length figure of an angel inscribed in a medallion. A nearly identical plaque in the cathedral treasury of St. Martin at Orense in Galicia (Northern Spain) suggests that this plaque once formed part of a large altar frontal commissioned by Bishop Alfonso of Orense (reigned 1174-1213). Fifty-three enamelled plaques of this important ensemble are still preserved at the Cathedral of Orense. Others, including this one, were possibly removed during the Napoleonic era.); Gift of Kelvin Smith; French, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Enamel Plaque from the Altar Frontal of Saint Martin at Orense, Spain. Created by the French School in the 12th century, this engraved, stippled, and gilded copper plaque measures 13.7x8.9 cm and is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The almond-shaped plaque depicts a half-length figure of an angel enclosed within a medallion. Its intricate design and ornate details highlight the exceptional craftsmanship of its creators. Interestingly, a similar plaque can be found in the cathedral treasury of St. Martin at Orense in Galicia, suggesting that it was once part of a larger altar frontal commissioned by Bishop Alfonso during his reign from 1174 to 1213. While fifty-three enamelled plaques from this remarkable ensemble are still preserved at the Cathedral of Orense today, others like this one may have been removed during the Napoleonic era. The significance and historical value attached to these plaques make them invaluable treasures. This print not only captures the beauty and elegance of this ancient artwork but also serves as a reminder of its rich cultural heritage. It symbolizes Christian faith with its depiction of an archangel and represents centuries-old artistic traditions that continue to inspire awe and admiration today.
