Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The River Mersey, from the series Western Gateway to the Empire, 1928" by Charles Edward Dixon takes us back in time to an era when the British Empire was at its zenith. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by John Waddington Ltd for HMSO, this artwork is part of a larger collection held at Manchester Art Gallery. The collection consists of artist-designed posters that were created between 1926 and 1933 as part of a campaign to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire. With over 200 posters acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s, these images vividly depict various aspects of life within the empire - its people, places, and products. However, viewing these posters today raises thought-provoking questions about the legacy of imperialism. While they showcase strong imagery that once aimed to turn Britons into empire-conscious consumers, they also reflect uncomfortable beliefs associated with colonialism. "The River Mersey" offers a glimpse into Liverpool's bustling port during this period. The vibrant colors captured through lithography bring alive scenes of ships sailing along one of Britain's most important waterways. This image serves as a reminder not only of our shared history but also prompts us to critically examine how it shapes our present-day understanding. As we appreciate this remarkable piece from Fine Art Finder's Bridgeman Images collection at Manchester Art Gallery, let us reflect on both its beauty and complexity – acknowledging past achievements while recognizing their impact on contemporary society.
