EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The great Black and White Duck" from 1749-73, a coloured engraving by George Edwards. The artwork is part of a private collection and was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg. Originally featured in Edwards' renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History". Seligmann took the plates and combined them with Mark Catesby's work titled "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". The image portrays an exquisite white duck adorned with striking black markings. Its elegant form is beautifully captured through intricate detailing in this engraved illustration. This piece falls under the genre of natural history artistry, showcasing birds as its primary subject matter. With its historical significance and artistic excellence, this print offers viewers a glimpse into both scientific exploration during the 18th century as well as masterful craftsmanship in engravings. It serves as a testament to the beauty found within nature's diverse creations while highlighting humanity's ongoing fascination with documenting these wonders for generations to come.
