EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Crested Long-tailed Pye" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Created between 1749-73, this print is a testament to their dedication in capturing the beauty of nature. The Crested Long-tailed Pye depicted in this artwork is a stunning avian creature with its distinctive crest and long tail feathers. The intricate details of its plumage are brought to life through the skilful use of colours and shading techniques employed by Edwards and Seligmann. Originally engraved by George Edwards for his renowned works on uncommon birds, these plates were later re-engraved by Michael Seligmann. Combining elements from Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, Seligmann added his own touch by translating names into German while incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. Displayed against a neutral background, this enchanting bird takes center stage as it perches gracefully on a branch. Its vibrant feathers contrast beautifully with the surrounding foliage, creating an aesthetically pleasing composition that captures both scientific accuracy and artistic finesse. This remarkable piece serves as a testament to the timeless allure of natural history illustrations. It transports viewers back in time to an era when explorers like Edwards and Seligmann dedicated themselves to documenting Earth's diverse flora and fauna for generations to come.
