EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Booby" is a remarkable piece of art created by Mark Catesby in the years 1749-73. The print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that was characteristic of Catesby's work. Originally engraved by George Edwards, this particular version was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a talented German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with Catesby's renowned work "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" translating names into German and adding additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. "The Booby" depicts a fascinating bird species known as Anseri bassano affinis fusca avis. With its distinctive appearance captured through meticulous detailing, this engraving offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both the beauty of nature and the skillful rendering of it on paper. As part of a private collection now held by ePurix Verlag Volker Christen, this artwork serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of natural history illustrations. Its inclusion in various fields such as ornithology or zoology makes it an invaluable resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
