EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The black and white Dobchick and the eared Dobchick" in stunning detail. Created by George Edwards, a renowned artist from the 18th century, this coloured engraving is a true masterpiece of natural history illustration. Originally engraved by Edwards himself for his works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular print has been re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German engraver, illustrator, and art dealer. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with the work of Catesby in "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". He translated the names into German while also adding some additional figures and plants not present in the originals. The result is an exquisite representation of two species: Podicipes albus et fuscus (the black and white Dobchick) alongside Podicipes auritus (the eared Dobchick). The attention to detail in capturing their unique features is truly remarkable. Displayed here as part of a private collection, this print offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both its artistic beauty and scientific significance. It serves as a testament to the talent of both George Edwards and Michael Seligmann in bringing these fascinating creatures to life through their engravings. Overall, this print stands as a timeless tribute to nature's wonders – an enduring piece that continues to captivate audiences with its delicate intricacies.
