Pattern 1853 Enfield. 577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern
5930011 Pattern 1853 Enfield.577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern, 1856 (rifle musket, percussion, Enfield, .577 in pattern 1853) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Pattern 1853 Enfield.577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern, 1856.
Manufactured under contract to British War Department by Robbins and Lawrence, Windsor, Vermont, USA, 1856.
During the Crimean War (1854-1856) there was a shortfall of Enfield rifle muskets. Insufficient numbers were being produced in the United Kingdom and, despite a contract for their manufacture being placed in Belgium, further assistance from both the United States and France was sought. An American contact was swiftly set up in February 1855 for 25, 000 US rifle muskets, altered to the Enfield bore, to be made by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont. Enfield rifle muskets made in Britain were variously stamped on the lock A ENFIELDA - for those made at the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield - A LACA for those manufactured by the London Armoury Company or A TOWERA for other contract gunmakers. The American produced Enfields were stamped with A WINDSORA on the lock.
Unforeseen financial difficulties at the company and complaints in Britain that the American Enfields were of inferior quality resulted in a total of only some 16, 000 rifle muskets being produced in the US for the British Army.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Pattern 1853 Enfield . 577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern. Manufactured in 1856 under contract to the British War Department by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, USA, this rifle musket played a significant role during the Crimean War (1854-1856). During this time, there was a shortage of Enfield rifle muskets in the United Kingdom. To address this shortfall, assistance was sought from both the United States and France. In February 1855, a contract was established with Robbins and Lawrence for 25,000 US rifle muskets to be altered to match the Enfield bore. The American-produced Enfields were distinguished by their stamp on the lock - A WINDSORA. However, unforeseen financial difficulties at Robbins and Lawrence resulted in only around 16,000 rifle muskets being produced for the British Army. Despite some complaints about their quality compared to those made in Britain, these American Enfields served as vital reinforcements during a critical period of conflict. This historic photograph captures not only an iconic weapon but also represents an important moment when nations collaborated to meet military demands. Preserved at London's National Army Museum since then; it stands as a testament to innovation and international cooperation amidst challenging circumstances.
