EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Palette in the Form of a Fish" an ancient Egyptian artifact dating back to approximately 3500-2950 BC. Crafted from graywacke, this stone palette served as a tool for grinding eye paint used for cosmetic purposes and protection against sun glare and eye infections. During the Predynastic Period, two types of palettes were prevalent: green ones made from malachite (copper ore) and black ones made from galena (lead ore). As funerary items, these ores held deep significance for the deceased, symbolizing regeneration and rebirth. The black palette represented the fertile soil along the banks of the Nile, while the green palette represented the lush vegetation sustained by its waters. The intricate design of this fish-shaped palette is a testament to ancient Egyptian craftsmanship. Measuring approximately 10.50 cm in width and 23.30 cm in length, it now resides at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Through this photo print, we are transported back thousands of years to witness not only an exquisite piece of art but also gain insight into ancient Egyptian beliefs surrounding life after death. This artifact serves as a tangible connection between our modern world and a civilization that flourished millennia ago on the banks of one of history's most iconic rivers –the Nile.
