Hercules, c. 30 BC-20 (bronze with silver and copper inlays)

500073 Hercules, c.30 BC-20 (bronze with silver and copper inlays)
by Roman Imperial Period (27 BC-476 AD); h:14.50 w:8.00 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Half-human, half-divine, not very bright but amazingly strong, this hero was the most popular of all mythological figures. Ordinary people could identify with his intellectural weakness, while his persistence in undergoing great trials gave them hope in their own earthly struggles. Roman artists often portrayed Hercules as middle-aged, as though greater maturity increased his power and virility. In his most famous adventure, Hercules slew a monster lion--the scourge of Nemea (near Corinth)--by strangling it and beating it with his olive-wood club. Forever after, he wore the beasts pelt as a trophy. This statuettes right hand once held a club.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable sculpture of Hercules, dating back to the Roman Imperial Period. Crafted between 30 BC and 20 AD, this bronze statue is adorned with intricate silver and copper inlays, adding a touch of opulence to its already awe-inspiring presence. Hercules, known for his incredible strength and half-divine lineage, was an immensely popular figure in mythology. This depiction portrays him as middle-aged, symbolizing increased power and virility through maturity. The hero's intellectual weakness resonated with ordinary people who could relate to his struggles while finding hope in their own earthly endeavors. One of Hercules' most renowned feats was slaying the monstrous lion that terrorized Nemea near Corinth. He defeated the creature by strangling it and beating it with his olive-wood club. As a trophy of this triumph, he proudly wore the lion's pelt. Although time has weathered this statuette's right hand that once held a club, its significance remains intact. It stands as a testament to ancient Roman artistry and craftsmanship while representing an era steeped in mythological tales. Now housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this exquisite artifact serves as a reminder of humanity's fascination with heroes throughout history. Its delicate details captured within this print allow us to appreciate both the beauty and symbolism behind this extraordinary piece from antiquity.
