EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in history - the unveiling of Bartholdis "Liberty" hand and torch at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, 1876. The colossal sculpture, known as Liberty Enlightening the World or more commonly referred to as the Statue of Liberty, was still under construction during this time. However, its arm and hand were completed enough to be displayed as a popular attraction. The image showcases the free-standing hand and torch mounted on a subscription kiosk. Figures can be seen gathered around the base of the structure, with one man standing proudly at the hilt of the torch. In the background stands prominent landmarks such as New York's Tribune Building and Women's Pavilion. Visitors to this exhibition were not only captivated by this magnificent piece but also had an opportunity to learn about Bartholdi's plan for completing it through literature available at the kiosk. They were invited to contribute towards funding for a pedestal for when the statue would eventually stand tall in New York City. Although incomplete at that time, this photograph serves as a reminder of how even fragments can hold immense power and symbolism. It symbolizes hope, freedom, and unity - values that continue to resonate with people from all walks of life till today.
