The arm and hand of Bartholdis Liberty Enlightening the World were all that had been completed of the colossal sculpture in 1876, and figured prominently as a popular attraction. Literature available at the kiosk at the base informed visitors of the details of Bartholdis plan and invited subscriptions of ten cents to one hundred dollars toward payment for a pedestal for the completed statue. After the Exposition closed the sculpture was transported to New York, where it was exhibited in Madison Square." --Looney. Old Philadelphia, p.214.

This photograph captures a significant moment in history - the unveiling of Bartholdis "Liberty" hand and torch at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, 1876. The colossal sculpture, known as Liberty Enlightening the World or more commonly referred to as the Statue of Liberty, was still under construction during this time. However, its arm and hand were completed enough to be displayed as a popular attraction. The image showcases the free-standing hand and torch mounted on a subscription kiosk. Figures can be seen gathered around the base of the structure, with one man standing proudly at the hilt of the torch. In the background stands prominent landmarks such as New York's Tribune Building and Women's Pavilion.
