Despite the fashionable success enjoyed by his work, Phyfe responded to stylistic changes, and by the 1830s had evolved a more severe mode that has been termed the " Grecian plain style." This sideboard and its cellarette (a cabinet for storing wine or liquor) are superb examples of that taste, relying for their effect on relatively simple structural forms with ornamentation largely limited to the use of boldly patterned rosewood veneers.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Sideboard and Cellarette, crafted by the renowned firm of Duncan Phyfe and Son in the mid-19th century. The piece, primarily made of rosewood veneer with secondary woods of pine and poplar, exudes elegance and sophistication. Displayed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this exquisite furniture set is a testament to Duncan Phyfe's mastery as an American furniture maker. Duncan Phyfe, born in Scotland in 1768 and later settling in New York City until his passing in 1854, became widely celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship. Influenced by English Sheraton designs from the early 1800s, Phyfe's creations are characterized by their simplicity, clean lines, slender legs, and classical ornamentation. As time progressed and stylistic preferences evolved during the 1830s onwards, Phyfe adapted his work to embrace a more austere aesthetic known as the "Grecian plain style". This particular sideboard and cellarette exemplify that transition beautifully. Rather than relying heavily on intricate embellishments or elaborate structures for impact, these pieces showcase bold patterns through their skillfully applied rosewood veneers. The photograph captures every detail of this remarkable furniture ensemble with precision. It serves as a reminder not only of Duncan Phyfe's enduring legacy but also of how artistry can evolve while still maintaining its timeless appeal.
