Edward Smith-Stanley Collection

Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom three times between 1852 and 1868. He was born in London in 1799 and educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He entered politics in 1820 as a Tory MP for Stockbridge, later becoming Chief Secretary for Ireland and then Leader of the House of Commons. In 1851 he became leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister for the first time. During his premiership he introduced several reforms including free trade policies which helped to stimulate economic growth. He also supported social reform such as extending voting rights to more people. After leaving office in 1868 he continued to serve in Parliament until his death in 1869 at Knowsley Hall near Liverpool. His legacy is one of a successful statesman who helped shape modern Britain through his political reforms during an era when Britain was undergoing great changes both socially and economically.
