EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite illuminated letter sent to Captain Percy Joseph Sillitoe, the esteemed Chief Constable of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The year was 1926 when this remarkable piece arrived, congratulating him on his appointment as Chief Constable of the City of Sheffield. Born in London in 1888, Sir Percy's illustrious career began with his service in the South Africa Police before rising through the ranks to become Chief Constable of Chesterfield and then East Riding. During his five-year tenure in Sheffield, Sir Percy gained notoriety for fearlessly tackling the violent gangs that plagued the city. His unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of justice earned him widespread respect among both law enforcement officials and citizens alike. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was appointed CBE in 1936 and knighted six years later. Intriguingly, this historic document also sheds light on Sir Percy's subsequent roles as he ascended further within law enforcement circles. Following his time in Sheffield, he assumed leadership as Chief Constable of Glasgow in 1931 before being entrusted with commanding Kent's new joint force three years later. However, it was undoubtedly his appointment as Director General of MI5 in 1946 that solidified his place among Britain's most influential figures. Preserved meticulously by Sheffield Libraries at arc02603, this print serves as a testament to Sir Percy Sillitoe's exceptional career trajectory and enduring legacy within policing history – forever immortal
