Clouds and mud on Mars, artwork C016 / 6320
Clouds and mud on Mars as seen from space, artwork. This is a prehistoric Mars, billions of years ago when its atmosphere was thicker and warmer and there was thought to be flowing water and mud deposits on its surface, and polar ice caps. Currently, Mars is a rocky desert world with no surface water. The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and Martian surface temperatures are well below freezing. Most of the water and atmosphere were lost to space, or locked up underground in deposits of ice. This image can also represent a future Mars, in the process of being terraformed for human habitation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Clouds and mud on Mars" takes us back billions of years ago to a prehistoric era when the Red Planet boasted a vastly different landscape. In this imaginative depiction, we witness Mars with a thicker and warmer atmosphere, allowing for flowing water and mud deposits on its surface. The image showcases the planet's polar ice caps as well. Fast forward to the present day, and Mars has transformed into a barren desert world devoid of surface water. Its thin atmosphere is predominantly composed of carbon dioxide, while temperatures remain frigidly below freezing. Much of its water and atmosphere have either escaped into space or become trapped underground in icy deposits. However, this mesmerizing artwork also offers us a glimpse into the future possibilities for Mars – one where it undergoes terraformation to make it suitable for human habitation. This vision hints at potential alterations that could be made to create an Earth-like environment on the red planet. Detlev van Ravenswaay's masterful illustration skillfully combines elements from both past and future scenarios, inviting contemplation about our own planet's history as well as humanity's aspirations beyond Earth. It serves as a reminder of how climate change can shape worlds while igniting our imagination about what lies ahead in our exploration of space.
