Harry Hawker - Homecoming of the Australian Aircraft pioneer

Wild scenes greet the return, in 1914, of Harry Hawker (1889-1921) - Australian aviation pioneer - on his return to Australia (to demonstrate the advanced Sopwith Tabloid, which he had helped design). A wild crowd nearly wrecked the plane on one occasion, and he further damaged it during stunt flying. On his return to England he continued designing and testing aircraft with Sopwith throughout the First World War. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this electrifying image from 1914, Harry Hawker (1889-1921), the renowned Australian aviation pioneer, is greeted with wild scenes upon his homecoming after demonstrating the advanced Sopwith Tabloid aircraft in his native land. Hawker, who had played a significant role in designing this revolutionary plane, was met with uncontainable fervor as he arrived back in Australia. The photograph captures the chaotic scene as a jubilant crowd rushes towards Hawker and the Tabloid, their excitement nearly causing a disaster. Amidst the pandemonium, a policeman attempts to maintain order, while Hawker, with a smile on his face, seems to relish the moment, perhaps even enjoying the thrilling ride of being mobbed by the enthusiastic mob. Despite the near-disaster, Hawker's demonstration tour continued, showcasing the groundbreaking capabilities of the Sopwith Tabloid. However, during one of his daring stunts, he further damaged the aircraft, forcing him to return to England to continue his work with Sopwith. This photograph encapsulates the spirit of the 1910s aviation era, a time of innovation, excitement, and the boundless potential of human ingenuity. The image stands as a testament to Harry Hawker's pioneering contributions to the world of flight and his enduring legacy as a famed Australian aviation hero.
