EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in 1927, Charles Augustus Lindbergh, the renowned American aviator, is seen receiving the prestigious Cross of the Legion of Honour from President Albert Lebrun (1871-1942) of France and the American Ambassador to France, Myron T. Herrick (1865-1930). The presentation took place in Paris, France, in recognition of Lindbergh's groundbreaking solo non-stop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris, which he had completed just a few months earlier. Lindbergh's achievement, which captivated the world, marked a significant milestone in aviation history. The young aviator had taken off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, New York, on May 20, 1927, and landed in Le Bourget Field, Paris, on May 21, 1927. His journey covered a distance of approximately 3,610 miles (5,810 kilometers) in just 33 hours and 29 minutes. The Cross of the Legion of Honour, France's highest decoration, was awarded to Lindbergh in a grand ceremony held at the Quai d'Orsay, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event was attended by thousands of people, including many dignitaries, who had gathered to celebrate Lindbergh's remarkable accomplishment. The presentation of the Cross of the Legion of Honour to Lindbergh symbolized the international recognition and admiration for his courage, skill, and determination. The photograph captures a proud and humbled Lindbergh, who stands between the French President and Ambassador Herrick, as they bestow the prestigious award upon him. The moment is a testament to the power of human achievement and the enduring bond between France and the United States.
