EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable panel from a large altarpiece, depicting the profound scene of the Crucifixion. The artist, Sigmund Gleismuller (attributed to), skillfully captures the emotional intensity and spiritual significance of this momentous event. In the center, Christ is depicted on the cross, symbolizing his ultimate sacrifice for humanity's salvation. To the left, we witness Mary falling into a swoon as she witnesses her beloved son's suffering. John, Mary Magdalene, and other holy women stand beside her in anguish and disbelief. On the right side of the composition, Pilate and soldiers are portrayed with stoic expressions that contrast starkly with their role in this tragic event. Their presence serves as a reminder of human indifference amidst divine intervention. Part of an altarpiece once housed at Augustinerchorherrenstift Rottenbuch, several panels have found their way into prestigious collections such as Bayerische Staatsgemaldesammlungen in Munich and Musee Grobet-Labadie in Marseille. Additionally, four other panels remain privately owned. The artist's use of oil paint brings depth and richness to every detail within this panel. Its dimensions - 123.6 cm height by 107.7 cm width - make it an imposing piece that demands attention and contemplation. Overall, this print offers viewers a glimpse into one part of an extraordinary altarpiece that encapsulates both artistic mastery and religious devotion from centuries past
