EDITORS COMMENTS
Holm Lea," located in Brookline, Massachusetts, was the residence of Charles Sprague Sargent (1845-1927) and his family. The beautiful estate, purchased by Ignacius Sargent, Charles' father, in 1845, was designed by architect Charles T. Sprague. The photograph, taken around 1914 by Frances Benjamin Johnston, captures the picturesque scene of the house surrounded by a blooming garden. The image is hand-colored, adding vibrant hues of pink to the blossoming roses and other flowers. Charles Sprague Sargent was a renowned botanist, horticulturist, and the first director of the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. He was also a prominent figure in the American horticultural scene and played a significant role in the introduction and cultivation of many exotic plant species in the United States. The estate's landscaping was overseen by Charles Sander, the gardener. The image showcases the meticulously designed garden, with its winding paths, colorful flowers, and the elegant lanterns that adorn the property. The serene atmosphere of the estate is further emphasized by the absence of modern distractions, transporting us back to an era of simplicity and natural beauty. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, is a testament to the rich heritage and history of American architecture and horticulture. The image, held in the Library of Congress, is a valuable addition to any collection of historic American landscapes and serves as a reminder of the beauty and elegance of the past.
