City of Providence, from Prospect Hill, 1872. Creator: Robert Hinshelwood
City of Providence, from Prospect Hill, 1872. The port city of Providence, Rhode Island, USA, was founded in 1636. There are more wooden buildings in Providence than can be found in any other place in the United States. One may travel over large districts of the city without seeing a house of stone or brick. At the same time, it may be noted that the proportion of beautiful and stately mansions, many of which are built of stable material, is uncommonly great; and these private dwelling-houses are often surrounded by spacious and cultivated grounds, filled with flowers and shaded by ornamental trees. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the enchanting cityscape of Providence in 1872. The port city, founded in 1636, is beautifully captured by Robert Hinshelwood's skilled lens and artistic eye. As we delve into this image, we discover that wooden buildings dominate the landscape - a unique characteristic setting Providence apart from any other place in the United States at that time. However, amidst this abundance of wooden structures lies an unexpected surprise - an extraordinary number of grand mansions built with sturdy materials like stone and brick. These stately dwellings stand proudly amid their spacious and meticulously cultivated grounds adorned with vibrant flowers and majestic ornamental trees. It is a testament to the prosperity and refined taste prevalent among the privileged residents who called these magnificent houses home.
