Flood defences, Venice. Construction work to raise the level of part of the historic city of Venice, Italy. This will protect against extreme floods, due to winds and tides, that are predicted to worsen because of global warming. The construction work is carefully planned to avoid altering the historic architecture that attracts tourists. This view looks from the eastern end of Venice, across the Canale di San Marco, to the San Giorgio Maggiore tower and beyond to the Chiesa della Salute domes. The construction is part of the MOSE flood defence project, the main part of which will be a set of moveable barriers across the sea inlets to Venices lagoon. Photographed in 2003
