Arnica pollen grain, SEM
Arnica pollen grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a chamisso arnica (Arnica chamissonis) plants pollen grain. The outer wall (exine) of this pollen grain is highly sculpted to aid the dispersal of the pollen grain. A flowering plant produces many pollen grains which need to be dispersed. This dispersal may happen as the spiky exine sticks to a pollinator such as a bee. Each pollen grain contains a male gamete (reproductive cell) that is intended to fertilise the ovule or egg (female gamete) of an arnica plant, and form a seed for a new plant. Magnification: x2670 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an Arnica pollen grain. Under the scanning electron microscope, we are able to witness the remarkable details of this tiny reproductive cell from a chamisso arnica plant. The outer wall, known as exine, is adorned with elaborate sculpting that serves a crucial purpose in dispersal. Flowering plants produce numerous pollen grains that must find their way to potential pollinators. In this case, the spiky exine structure acts as nature's adhesive, allowing it to cling onto passing bees or other pollinators. This interaction ensures that each pollen grain carries within it a male gamete - a reproductive cell responsible for fertilizing the female gamete or ovule of another arnica plant. The ultimate goal? To form a seed and give birth to new life. It is through this delicate process of reproduction that arnica plants perpetuate their species and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our natural world. When printed at 10cm wide, this image reveals its true magnificence at x2670 magnification. Its vivid colors and sharp spikes capture our imagination and remind us of the extraordinary complexity hidden within even the tiniest elements of nature. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing photograph, let us marvel at the wonders of botany and appreciate how every living organism plays an essential role in sustaining our planet's biodiversity.
