The rear of Goonvrea House, Perranarworthal, Cornwall. Probably early 1900s
A view of the rear of Goonvrea House through the trees. In 1980, Rex Barratt writes in his book, Stately Homes in and Around Truro, " Goonvrea, probably built by the Fox family of Falmouth and later owned and occupied by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, M.P. for Truro (1865-1878), who was a director of the Perran Iron Foundry and the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Cornwall. Later owners were J.P. Paull, and W.E. Harris, who was there in 1939. During the last war it was utilised by U.S. troops and is now a well-known hotel". The hotel was owned by Tony and Joyce Webb and is reported to have been devastated by fire in 1982. By the early 1990s new build houses were erected on the site. The stable block remained standing and has since been converted into houses. Photographer: Arthur Philp

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting rear view of Goonvrea House, nestled amidst a picturesque landscape in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. Believed to have been captured in the early 1900s by photographer Arthur Philp, this image offers a glimpse into the rich history and grandeur of this magnificent estate. Goonvrea House is steeped in heritage, with its origins attributed to the esteemed Fox family of Falmouth. However, it was later owned and inhabited by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, an influential figure who served as Member of Parliament for Truro from 1865 to 1878. Notably, Sir Frederick was not only associated with the prestigious Perran Iron Foundry but also held the esteemed position of being Cornwall's first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons. Over time, Goonvrea House changed hands and found itself under different ownerships such as J. P. Paull and W. E. Harris before eventually becoming a renowned hotel under Tony and Joyce Webb's stewardship. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when fire ravaged the beloved establishment in 1982. Despite this devastating event, new houses were erected on-site during the early 1990s while preserving Goonvrea House's stable block which has since been transformed into charming residential dwellings. This remarkable photograph serves as both a testament to Goonvrea House's storied past and a poignant reminder that even through adversity, fragments of history can be preserved for future generations to appreciate
